Want to grow things but don’t know how to start? This workshop will be covering gardening basics such as how to plant a seed, how to water and how to create the conditions for a plant to grow. You don’t need a big garden to enjoy growing things – come along to this workshop to learn more about how to grow in small spaces such as balconies, patios, windowsills, and even indoors. We will be learning about different containers, plants that do well in small spaces, and how to create optimal growing conditions in any location.

How can we grow international food staples in the UK? This workshop will look at how to create the conditions to grow things such as okra, callaloo, chilli and Mediterranean herbs in a cold, wet climate with heavy clay soil. We will also be learning how to make small greenhouses out of waste materials to help with growing plants from warmer tropical locations.
Abbey Gardens: Saturday August 27, 12pm – 1pm
Forest Gate Community Garden: Saturday August 27, 2pm – 3pm (rescheduled from the 13th due to extreme weather. Apologies for any inconvenience)
Manor Park Community Garden: Sunday August 14, 11am – 12pm
In the beautiful, biodiverse surrounds of Forest Gate Community Garden, this workshop will explore flowers – how to identify, grow, care for and enjoy them. We will be learning about seed saving, how to create beautiful posies and bouquets, and the best ways to dry and preserve flowers to enjoy them year-round.
Saturday August 20, 2pm – 3pm
This one-off workshop at Abbey Gardens will take advantage of late-summer produce, and participants will harvest food and be involved in the preparation of a meal for everyone to share. Come and learn how to make the most of home-grown food, and share in the community spirit!
Saturday September 24, 12pm – 1pm
This workshop will use Manor Park Community Garden’s fantastic greenhouse to explore how to continue gardening and growing over winter. We will look at plants that do well in the colder months, jobs to do in the garden in the off season, and how to take advantage of a greenhouse to grow produce year-round.
